📘 Professional Career
Scientific research
Between Jan. of 2001 and Aug. of 2003 he worked as a EU research grant holder in the field of earthquake engineering, initially at the University of Rome La Sapienza and subsequently at the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) in Lisbon.
- In Rome, his research focused on innovative probabilistic methods for assessing the seismic risk of reinforced concrete structures designed in accordance with older seismic design codes.
- In Lisbon, he was a member of the research team that demonstrated the seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete flat-slab buildings, a structural system widely used in Southern Europe (Italy, Spain and Portugal) due to its lower construction cost.
Military service
Between Nov. of 2004 and Apr. of 2006 he served in the Hellenic Army as a Reserve Engineering Officer (2nd lieutenant).
Freelance
Since Apr. of 2006 he has been practising as a freelancer in Athens. His extensive professional experience covers a broad range of engineering disciplines, including:
- Structural design/assessment and construction site supervision,
- Real estate valuation (he was also an external valuer for the National Bank of Greece between 2010 and 2015),
- Topographic surveys and stake out,
- Legalisation of unauthorised constructions,
- A wide range of technical studies, including property subdivision, determination of disputed property boundaries, construction cost estimations etc., prepared either on behalf of private clients or by appointment of the Courts of Athens and Piraeus, on whose official lists of court-appointed experts he has served since 2004.
📰 Public Presence
He is widely known for his contribution, through articles and interviews (“Efimerida ton Syntakton”, “Militaire News”, “Le Monde”, “Radio France Internationale”, “Metropolis 95.5 FM”, among others), to exposing the valuation practices and legal mechanisms employed in the grabbing of the public land at the former Hellinikon International Airport and its coastal zone (Agios Kosmas). Note: he was one of the two original court-appointed experts assigned by the Financial Crime Prosecutor’s Office (ΣΔΟΕ) in November 2014 to conduct the investigation into the Hellinikon property; although both experts submitted reports presenting evidence and technical findings, the investigation was ultimately closed and archived in 2016.
He has also published articles highlighting conflicts of interest involving certified real estate valuers registered with the Greek Ministry of Finance, who are appointed to determine the opening bid prices for properties auctioned by banks and investment funds while simultaneously maintaining external professional relationships with those institutions. Note: G.A. is a Certified Real Estate Valuer registered with the Greek Ministry of Finance, holding professional certification from the Technical Chamber of Greece (ΤΕΕ‑ΦΠΠ and ΤΕΕ‑ΤΜΕΔΕ).
